Beard-Eyelash-Eyebrow Procedures
When it comes to changing up their personal style, men often look towards facial hair to redefine their look or make a fashion statement. Sometimes, the added facial hair can give a guy that masculine feeling within just a couple of days of new growth. For some men, however, facial hair is sparse or missing, which can be frustrating.
Fortunately, facial hair transplant surgery is now a common cosmetic procedure to help men gain a full beard and ongoing growth. Plano, Texas hair restoration surgeon Dr. Joseph Yaker, offers Follicular Unit Extraction (SmartGraft™ FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) for men who desire facial hair restoration.

FACIAL HAIR LOSS
The lack of facial hair growth or patchy beards can result from genetics, electrolysis, scarring from physical trauma or surgery, or congenital defects (i.e., cleft lip). But regardless of the reason, facial hair restoration surgery can enhance your appearance by producing dense, natural-looking facial hair.
An uncommon form of hair loss, alopecia barbae, is a type of alopecia areata, which occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own hair follicles, leading to smooth, hairless patches on the beard. Treatment for alopecia barbae includes corticosteroid injections and not facial hair transplantation.
SURGICAL CONSIDERATION
Men experiencing facial hair loss or struggle to grow facial hair are good candidates for hair transplantation surgery. Facial hair transplant surgery is performed using SmartGraft™ FUE or FUT, where hair is taken from the back of the scalp and re-implanted into the facial areas where the patient desires new growth.
The main difference between the two procedures is how the donor hair is removed from the back of the scalp. This technique is very delicate by nature, and thus Dr. Yaker ensures that the facial hair lines are drawn accurately and that the placement and direction of the hairs are implanted so that they appear natural and mimic normal hair growth. The average amount of grafts used for facial hair transplant surgery is indicated below:
- Mustache: 350-500 grafts
- Complete goatee: Up to 1,500 grafts
- Sideburns: 200-250 grafts on each side
- Beard: 300-3,000 grafts depending on areas of loss and desired result
WHAT TO EXPECT
SmartGraft™ FUE or FUT for the face are both performed using a local anesthetic and an oral sedative. With FUE hair transplant, individual hairs are removed from the scalp with the follicles intact using a micro-punch device. With FUT, a strip of tissue is surgically removed from the back of the head, and the hair grafts are dissected from this tissue.
A facial hair transplant procedure lasts 2-8 hours, depending on the patient’s aesthetic desires. Following the procedure, tiny red scabs will appear over the newly transplanted follicles but will go away within one week. At around 3-4 weeks, the transplanted hairs will begin to fall out. This is a completely normal process, as the follicles below the skin are still in place and will begin to grow new hair at around 3-4 months.
The newly transplanted facial hair is permanent and fits in well with the texture and pattern of their natural hair in other areas of their face. Once grown in, men can groom the hair just like normal facial hair.
EXPECTED COST
Facial hair transplant surgery is performed in our accredited hair restoration surgical center. The price will vary depending on how many grafts are needed to achieve the desired cosmetic result.
HAIR TRANSPLANT FAQS
PERMANENT RESULTS?
Yes, once the newly transplanted follicles are in place, hair growth will be permanent and need to be groomed just like normal facial hair. Once the hair begins growing in, you’re free to style your new beard however you want.
AM I A CANDIDATE?
Men who struggle with growing a full beard or facial hair are good candidates for this surgery. This means their facial hair does not grow fully or may appear scarce or patchy. For this surgery to be successful, there must be enough healthy hair follicles in the donor area (i.e., the back of the scalp).
SMARTGRAFT™ FUE OR FUT?
For facial hair restoration, Dr. Yaker uses both Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Both procedures offer great results. He will discuss which method is more appropriate after discussing your aesthetic goals based on how you wear your hair and the appropriate donor site. This is usually a big deciding factor when choosing which surgery to use.

EYELASH TRANSPLANT SURGERY
Eyelashes are considered the heart of the eye. Long, dark and lavish lashes have an appeal and can create a dramatic effect for women. It’s why most women will not leave home without applying a little mascara.
Today’s cosmetic enhancements in mascara and false eyelashes have made it increasingly easier for women to put their lashes on display. However, when the lashes are too sparse, or if they are missing or weak, this enhancement is simply impossible to achieve with makeup and eyelash extensions alone.
Eyelash transplantation surgery, offered by Plano, Texas hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, can be performed to cosmetically enhance the appearance of the eyelashes by permanently placing hair where they are absent.

EYELASH HAIR LOSS
The loss of one’s eyelashes can be the result of genetics, skin diseases and certain medical conditions, medications such as cancer treatments, trauma (physical, surgical, thermal or chemical), and even compulsive plucking or pulling of eyelashes (trichotillomania). Many women today have chosen to use lash extensions to enhance their look, however, for some, the overuse of eyelash extensions can cause permanent eyelash loss. This repeated use of eyelash extensions can cause traction alopecia, a condition where the hair falls out due to excessive tension placed on the hair shaft.
SURGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
An eyelash transplant procedure is performed to replace missing eyelashes and fill in areas where lashes are absent, sparse, or damaged. To achieve this, Dr. Yaker performs Follicular Unit Transplantation, known as FUT. Performed under a mild oral sedative and local anesthetic, the 3-4 hour procedure is essentially painless, as is the recovery period.
This surgery involves removing a strip of hair from the back of the head, and microscopically dissecting the hairs into individual hair grafts. The grafts are then threaded one-by-one into the upper eyelid through a curved needle, and trimmed to its appropriate length. The amount of grafts required depends on donor hair characteristics, the extent of eyelash loss, and desired density.
This procedure is extremely delicate, and Dr. Yaker takes great measures to ensure the new eyelashes are properly placed and angled correctly so that they grow naturally, creating beautifully shaped lashes that last a lifetime.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Eyelash transplantation is a relatively quick procedure using local anesthesia, requiring about an hour per eyelid. Following the eyelash transplant procedure, the patient may develop mild swelling and pinkness, which will subside in a few days. For 3-4 days, tiny scabs will form where the new hairs were placed. These scabs will fall out and the newly transplanted hairs will begin to shed around 2-3 weeks following surgery.
Within about 3-4 months, the new lashes will start to grow, and by 12 months, the final aesthetic result is attained. Once donor hairs are transplanted, they will continue to grow naturally. Because the eyelashes were created using head hairs, patients will need to trim their eyelashes and curl them on a routine basis in order to blend in with their current lashes.
EXPECTED COST
Eyelash transplant surgery is performed in our accredited surgical facility under a local anesthetic. The average price for FUT eyelash transplantation is around $5,000. In comparison, devoted eyelash extension wearers spend around $1,500 to $2,000 per year for non-permanent results.
EYELASH TRANSPLANT FAQS
DO EYELASH TRANSPLANT PRODUCE SOLID RESULTS?
Eyelash transplant surgery provides incredibly natural looking, permanent results. Approximately 80-90% of the transplanted lashes can be expected to grow, and it is not until around one year, that the full aesthetic result is complete.
WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR EYELASH TRANSPLANT?
While seeing Dr. Yaker for your comprehensive consultation, he will review your medical history, examine your eyelashes and evaluate your donor hair. Patients must have good quality donor hair on the back of the head to use for the transplant process. Women with extremely curly hair do not make good candidates because if the curl is too sharp, constant training of the eyelashes may not be enough to prevent an unnatural appearance or even constant eye irritation.
In general, individuals who have thin, missing or weak eyelashes are candidates. Skin diseases and medical conditions must be ruled out and/or treated before being considered for surgery. Patients who have been diagnosed with a psychological disorder, such as trichotillomania, must be cured of this condition prior to hair replacement surgery. This means they no longer feel the need or urge to pull their hair, which would compromise the surgical result.
Patients who wish to have their eyelashes restored will be evaluated by Dr. Yaker during the initial consultation to determine the best course of action.
LATISSE® OR SURGERY?
Latisse® (generic name: Bimatoprost) is an FDA approved topical medication prescribed for patients who wish to have fuller, longer, darker eyelashes. Latisse® can safely and effectively enhance eyelash growth.
Applied once a day for at least 16 weeks, it has been shown to be effective. But it only works on active hair follicles and does not come without the potential risk of side effects. Latisse® does not grow hair in areas where eyelashes are missing. This is when eyelash transplant surgery would be an excellent option.

EYEBROW TRANSPLANT SURGERY
Eyebrows are an essential part of the face. Aside from protecting your eyes from moisture, they accentuate the eyes, create a window for expression, and are a marker for facial identity. Eyebrows define how we look, and an elegantly shaped and arched eyebrow can be very becoming. Unlike the loss of scalp hair, the loss of one’s eyebrows is not viewed as a natural process and is, therefore, not cosmetically acceptable.
When penciling and tattooing can no longer create the look you want, eyebrow transplant surgery can restore the beauty of your brows. Board-certified hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, performs eyebrow transplant surgery for Plano and Dallas-Fort Wellington, Texas area patients who wish to restore their eyebrows and regain their self-confidence to show their face from all angles.

EYEBROW HAIR LOSS
Eyebrows can be lost for many reasons. They can be absent from birth, thin over time due to age and genetics, fall out due to skin conditions, other medical diseases and cancer treatments, or fail to grow back due to repeated plucking, compulsive hair pulling (Trichotillomania), burns, scars and even chemo or radiation therapy.
Men and women who have lost their eyebrows often feel anxious and uncomfortable in social situations, fearing that the focus is on their missing eyebrows. Eyebrow hair transplantation is a permanent solution for those individuals who wish to restore complete loss of their eyebrows, enhance thinning eyebrows, or conceal scars within the eyebrow.
SURGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Dr. Yaker performs permanent, state-of-the-art eyebrow transplant surgery using either Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (SmartGraft™ FUE). Eyebrow transplant surgery is an in-office procedure performed using a mild oral sedative and applying local anesthesia to each eyebrow. Before surgery, Dr. Yaker carefully designs the shape and arch of the brow based on personal features, natural hair direction and the patient’s goals.
The surgical process involves removing hair from the back of the head (permanent donor area), and carefully transplanting them into artistically placed sites on the eyebrow area created to mimic the natural growth pattern of each eyebrow. On average, it takes anywhere from 100 to 400 hairs per eyebrow depending on facial features, hair characteristics, hair loss and brow design, in order to create a symmetrical, full appearance.
WHAT TO EXPECT
After surgery, it is important for patients to follow Dr. Yaker’s post-operative instructions to ensure effective healing and hair growth. Within 1-2 days after surgery, tiny scabs will appear on the transplanted area. Some mild swelling, redness and bruising may appear within the first few days, but will subside. The tiny scabs will go away within 7 days and, just like in scalp hair transplantation, the implanted hairs will fall out, beginning 2-3 weeks following the procedure as the hair follicles underneath the scalp make way for new, healthy hair.
Hair regrowth in the recipient eyebrow areas begin around 3 to 4 months later. It takes about 12 months for final results to be achieved, allowing for the transplanted hairs to grow and blend in with the existing brows. Because the hair used for eyebrow transplant surgery comes from an area of the scalp where hair growth is continuous, the eyebrows will need to be trimmed and groomed on a routine basis.
Patients don’t find this to be an issue as most are used to routinely plucking or penciling their eyebrows. Eventually, trimming becomes less frequent as the growth rate slows down. While in most cases a patient’s desired outcome can be achieved with one session, subsequent procedures may be required to achieve greater density.
EXPECTED COST
The cost of eyebrow transplant surgery depends on the extent of the procedure and the number of hair grafts needed to achieve the desired results. On average, patients can expect to pay around $5,000 for this procedure.
EYEBROW TRANSPLANT FAQS
WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR EYEBROW TRANSPLANT?
Individuals with straight or slightly wavy hair are candidates for eyebrow transplant surgery. This procedure is for men and women with thinning, sparse brow hairs or no eyebrows, as long as medical conditions have been ruled out and/or treated. Medical conditions that cause eyebrow loss include thyroid disorders, alopecia areata (hair loss due to an autoimmune condition), or trichotillomania (an impulsive disorder that causes the patient to compulsively pull out hair).
Women who have previously undergone eyebrow tattooing may still have an eyebrow transplant. In fact, the combination of the two treatments create the appearance of a fuller density.
IS MEDICATION AVAILABLE FOR EYEBROW LOSS?
Currently, there are no FDA-approved medications on the market to help with eyebrow regrowth. The majority of over-the-counter products fail to produce any noticeable results, including Rogaine® (generic name: Minoxidil).
Latisse® (generic name: Bimatoprost) is FDA approved for the treatment of inadequate eyelashes but not for eyebrow hair restoration. While the off-label use of Latisse® may slightly help to thicken eyebrow hairs, they do not replace missing hair. Currently, hair transplant surgery is the only option for fully restoring the eyebrows.
ARE THERE RISKS OR BAD RESULTS INVOLVED IN EYEBROW TRANSPLANTS?
Eyebrow hair transplantation carries minimal risk. Although pretty rare, the transplanted hair can grow in a different direction than desired. If this occurs, the hair can be removed by plucking, or trained to grow in the proper direction. Before your eyebrow transplant, Dr. Yaker will go over your medical history and discuss the most appropriate treatment options unique to your situation. Dr. Yaker will also discuss the potential side effects of the procedure and how to best take care of yourself after surgery.
